Emergency Backup Power Diesel Tank Cleaning

We developed a product which will enable the facility management team to be assured that their diesel fuel handling system is in good shape to be able to handle eventualities in case of grid power system failure. The product was Tristar Deep Tank Cleaning System which we use to provide diesel tank cleaning services to private installations with diesel tanks.

This service was introduced as a solution to a problem we were trying to solve – How to clean tanks without putting people in diesel tanks to clean them. At the core of the problem was client requirement of human safety and at the same time need for cleaning the tank thoroughly to ensure good fuel is delivered to their customers.

  • Emptying the tank by transferring product to another tank.
  • Cleaning the tank through Impingement, for diesel fuel tanks diesel is used as wash fluid.
  • During impingement, fuel is sucked and filtered and jetted back into the tank.
  • Fuel filtration and polishing of the diesel used for cleaning
  • Fuel filtration and polishing of all diesel at the facility while being transferred back to cleaned tank.
  • Day tank and connected pipelines are also flushed clean.

Tristar Deep Tank Cleaning Process comprises of following steps

  • No confined space entry. Non manual tank entry cleaning.
  • 100% internal tank surface impacted and cleaned. 360 degree Impingement Technology.
  • No water contamination as water is not used to fill tank to degas or clean the tank.
  • Tank downtime less than 6 hours.
  • Diesel tank cleaned with diesel hence no introduction of any other product which will need to be removed before taking diesel back into the tank.
  • Before and After tank cleaning inspection of the tank.
  • Flame Proof pumps, panel and instruments.

Tank leakage test is also conducted as an additional service post cleaning. Tank is tested to ensure there is no product leakage into the ground or vice versa.

We have setup a lab inhouse to test diesel samples, samples before and after cleaning are tested with reference to specifications as given IS 1460.


Retail Outlet (Petrol Pumps) Tank Cleaning

For retail outlets delivering quality fuel is of utmost priority and for this they need to ensure that their underground tanks are clean.

We developed Tank cleaning by Fuel Filtration and Polishing (FFP) service as a solution to a problem we were trying to solve – How to clean tanks without putting people in these tanks to clean them. At the core of the problem was human safety and minimum downtime of tank as downtime directly impacts sales of the RO.

Why is tank cleaning required?

  • Fuels has shelf life of approximately 6-12 months at temperatures above 30 Deg C.
  • At terminals fuel is filtered upto 40 Mesh (420 micron) before being loaded into tankers.
  • Tankers carry fuel along with sediments, water and other contaminants and offload into RO tank without any filtration.
  • RO tanks have various openings which are exposed to atmosphere which are a source of water seepage into the tank.
  • As fuel gets older fine sediment and gum formation takes place.
  • As tanks warm up during the day and cool down at night, water from condensation is introduced to the tank.
  • This water helps germinate fungal spores present in fuel, known as the ‘Fuel Bug’ or ‘Diesel Bug’. These organisms spread rapidly, eating up the fuel’s hydrocarbons and leaving behind a waxy sludge or ‘Biomass’
  • Microbes depend on this water for growth. Additionally, microbes depend on the organic and inorganic molecules in diesel fuel for nutrition.
  • Microbes in diesel fuel produce acids that gradually skew the fuel's pH towards an acidic environment causing increased corrosion.
  • Fine rust particles generally don’t get captured in filters, these damage precision components, injectors on the Engine and high pressure pump which are the most expensive components in the vehicle engine.

How is FFP process carried?

  • Tristar mobile unit is positioned at the RO without disturbing the vehicular movement at RO.
  • FFP system inlet hose is inserted in the tank through available nozzle.
  • FFP system outlet hose is connected to the decantation line.
  • Product and contaminants are sucked from the tank bottom.
  • This is then passed through 7 stages of Filtration and Separation where sediments, rust particles, muck, free water etc up to 5 micron are separated.
  • The filtered product is put back into the tank.
  • The process of recirculation is carried out for 4-5 Hours depending on the level of contamination until clear product is being sucked from bottom of the tank.
  • Filters are opened and cleaned as and when required based on indicators.

Advantages of Tristar UGT Cleaning Process

  • No man entry in confined space.
  • Quick turnaround – FFP process is completed in 4- 6 hours depending on the level of contamination in the tank.
  • Removal of rust particles, free water, muck and contamination.
  • Post cleaning ATG reading is more accurate.
  • Flame proof pumps, panel and instrumentation.
  • Elimination of taking tank out of service for more than a week for cleaning
  • No Degassing required, degassing as per SOP is done by filling the tank upto brim with water and leaving it for few days. Process is repeated until it is safe for man entry. Disposal of this water is an environment hazard as it contains traces of hydrocarbon.

HFO/ FO and other Hydrocarbon Tank Cleaning

Most of the Oil companies and terminals believe in cleaning the oil tanks manually. This is done primarily because it is cost effective as labour is contractual i.e no obligation post cleaning and even during cleaning the contractor is responsible. Generally, a mobile scaffolding is erected inside the tank, cleaning personnel stand on the temporary platforms to jet the shell surface.

Tristar is looking to address the issue of man entry into these tanks for cleaning. We have developed cleaning systems using 360 Degree Impingement Technology with minimalistic man entry in confined spaces. We have custom designed and built systems for cleaning white oils such as Diesel, Petrol, Kerosene, ATF as well as black oils such as HFO, FO and Crude oil.

For Black oils our cleaning process involves

  • Recovery of oil left over in the tank – this can be done using enzyme technology and / or mechanical separation where 80% plus recovery of oil in sludge is possible.
  • Emptying the contents of the tank without man entry.
  • Using our systems to Jet the wall surface and the tank bottom.
  • Recirculating wash fluid to optimize on water and chemical consumption.
  • Draining the tank completely and cleaning out the bottom plate if any left over material is there.
